Standard Micronization

Micronization at standard conditions using spiral jet mills

Standard micronization is a physical process that reduces the size of powders to a specified particle size distribution. Spiral jet mills use fluid jet milling technology to achieve this goal. During the milling process, particles with different masses and speeds inside the milling chamber collide and break into numerous smaller particles. The number and size of the particles generated depend directly on the kinetic energy the two particles accumulate before the collision.

The parameters that control the final particle size distribution are the product amount fed into the milling chamber per unit time (feed rate) and the fluid pressure through the nozzle section, which determines the jet speed.

The equipment used for standard micronization consists of a dosing unit that feeds the mill with a given quantity of product to be micronized, a fluid-jet mill where the micronization process takes place, and a cyclone separating filter where the micronized product and fluid are separated. These parts are typically made of AISI 316 stainless steel, with the mill-cyclone filter connecting hose made of food-grade polyresin and the filtering sleeves on the centrifugal separating filter made of antistatic polyester.

Standard micronization using spiral jet mills offers several advantages, including very fine powder down to 1 micron, yields up to 99%, reduced product build-up, precise scalability guaranteed, and easy cleaning. These benefits make spiral jet mills an ideal choice for various applications, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and food products. With its advanced technology and equipment, Munit is a leading provider of standard micronization services for customers across various industries.

How it works

Micronization at standard conditions using spiral jet mills

During the process, particles with different masses and speeds inside the milling chamber collide and break into numerous smaller particles. Particle-particle collision leads to:

  • Reduction to 1 - 10 microns size using compressed process gas (air and nitrogen)

Advantages

Standard micronization using spiral jet mills offers several advantages

  • Active surface increase (lower particle size)
  • Bioavailability Enhancement
  • Solubility Acceleration
  • Palatability properties improvement
  • Pulmonary target size achievement
  • Drug Delivery Improvement
  • Modified Release Improvement

Applications

Range of Application

  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Oral dosage form
  • Inhalation powders (MDI and DPI)
  • Transdermal drug delivery
  • Oncological solid dosage form
  • Opthalmic dosage form
