Cryogenic Micronization for Enhanced Product Integrity

Improving Processability and Purity for Pharmaceutical and Food Applications

Cryogenic milling for polymers or materials with enhanced elastic properties

Cryogenic milling represents a specialised and highly effective process for the micronization of compounds exhibiting enhanced elastic properties, such as polymers or other challenging materials. This advanced technique meticulously controls the temperature of both the product and the milling chamber, lowering it significantly—typically between -30°C and -150°C. This precise temperature reduction ensures that the product falls below its glass transition temperature, thereby dramatically increasing its fragility and susceptibility to mechanical impact.

Furthermore, cryogenic milling allows for the cooling of the carrier gas, most commonly nitrogen. This critical step prevents undesirable temperature increases caused by friction during the milling process, which is particularly beneficial when processing powders with low melting points or products that are highly temperature-sensitive. The direct cooling of both the product and the milling chamber, coupled with the cooled carrier gas, optimises the milling conditions for even the most delicate materials.

Benefits of micronization at Low Temperature

Our cryogenic milling process offers distinct advantages, ensuring superior product quality and integrity:

Preserved Particle Integrity: prevents an increase in amorphous particles and avoids polymorphic changes.

Enhanced Purity: mitigates any increase in impurity levels.

Optimised Dispersion: eliminates re-agglomeration of micronised particles.

Product Stability: prevents the degradation of highly sensitive products.

Controlled Quality: ensures precise control over the product’s overall integrity.

Improved Processability: significantly enhances the processability of elastic or sticky compounds.
